The next generation of the Asus Zenfone series is right around the corner. Asus made the announcement with a microsite detailing the launch timeline. Also included are teasers that hint at what to expect from the upcoming Zenfone 8.

The Asus Zenfone 8 series is launching on May 12, visualized with the help of a countdown timer on the official landing page. The live event will likely be a virtual one, but we won’t find out until the counter hits zero. At any rate, it is all but confirmed that at least two Zenfone 8 phones are making their debut.

The taglines read ‘Big on performance, compact in size, which we take to mean the flagship series will be powered by the top-end Snapdragon 888. In addition to the standard Zenfone 8, Asus also has a smaller Zenfone 8 Mini lined up for release.

While the manufacturer is keeping things under wraps, the rumor mill has managed to uncover many details. The Zenfone 8 Mini, codenamed ‘Saki,’ features a 5.92” AMOLED screen that refreshes at a fluid 120Hz and delivers a sharp full HD resolution. It works with 16GB of memory which makes multitasking a breeze. Plus, the Zenfone 8 Mini charges over 30W.

The base Zenfone 8, codenamed ‘Picasso,’ has a much larger 6.67” OLED panel but with the same specs as the Mini. Furthermore, 16GB of memory and Qualcomm silicon are also shared across the board.

Asus developed a novel flip-over camera system for the previous-gen Zenfone 7. The design not only contributed to an all-screen, intrusion-free screen but also used the superior main camera for selfies.

But this year, it seems to have been swapped for a far more standard camera arrangement. Reports point to four cameras in total featuring a 64MP Sony-made wide sensor, a 12.2MP ultra-wide lens, an 8MP telephoto camera, and a 24MP front-facing lens.
