Honor Play 5 5G, Honor’s latest premium mid-range phone, launched in China yesterday following a brief promotional campaign. The phone supports the most cutting-edge fast-charging Honor has to offer, features a stunning display, and runs on a high-performance 5G chip. Let’s take a quick look.

Before we get into the details, note that new Honor releases have so far been limited to China, where phones aren’t shipped with Google Mobile Services. The Honor Play 5 is no exception. So while the global variant of this product may get Google’s software support (which was the point of splitting Honor from Huawei,) it won’t be confirmed until the company sells the phone outside China.

Coming back to the feature set, the Play 5 uses MediaTek Dimensity 800U to do its number-crunching. The CPU inside this chip is clocked at a hefty 2.4GHz and the modem supports dual-mode 5G.

The 3800 mAh battery powering this hardware is on the lower end, but the Play 5 makes up for it with its flagship-grade 66W charging. Honor promises a full top-up in just 35 minutes! To manage the heat generated from this feature, a graphene-based cooling system is in place too.

The Honor Play 5 has a slim, lightweight footprint thanks to the smaller 3800 mAh cell. Its shell has flat metal edges, a depth of 7.46mm, and weighs only 179g. You can pick from turquoise, charcoal, and silver-purple shades.

Next, we have the phone’s display — a 6.3” OLED panel that delivers a full HD resolution. Paper-thin bezels and a U-shaped notch surround this screen. Honor Play 5 also supports HDR10 content, has a richer color gamut, and houses a fingerprint scanner under the display.

The camera system is a standard affair for a mid-ranger, featuring a 64MP wide camera, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and two 2MP macro and portrait sensors. On the front, a 16MP selfie lens is embedded in the notch.

Honor Play 5 5G comes in 8GB+128GB and 8GB+256GB storage options, starting from 2,099 Yuan (~ Rs. 49,900.) The build comes with NFC, but the previous-gen MagicUI 4, based on Android 10.
