Huawei's P50 lineup features two traditional flagships the P50 and P50 Pro and a clamshell foldable called the P50 Pocket introduced in December last year. So far, the P50 series has been a China-exclusive. But the Huawei P50 Pro and P50 Pocket are headed to the global market soon.
Huawei’s Malaysian arm tweeted that the Huawei P50 Pocket and P50 Pro will make their international debut on January 12. The countries weren’t specified, but the two flagships will presumably start their journey in Malaysia. Plus, we already know everything there is to know about the phones (save for the pricing, of course.)
Huawei P50 Pocket is the first foldable from the brand to rock a clamshell form factor — placing it in direct competition with rival Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip3. It’s built on a double ring-like camera design. But here, the second ring encloses the cover display.
You can pick from diamond and gold finishes. The gold is dubbed the ‘Premium’ edition, featuring a jewelry-inspired design. It’s a unique but polarizing look. Also, the fingerprint scanner is merged with the power button on the frame. And the front camera is housed inside a hole punch.
The two halves of the new addition to the Huawei price catalog fold flush with each other without leaving a gap, as you would find in the Galaxy Z Flip 3. It’s thanks to Huwaei’s proprietary hinge, which they claim is also more robust than the competition.
On the P50, the ring for the cover display is replaced with a second camera housing. Together they form a ‘stove top’ design, containing a cluster of LED flashes and four lenses. The cameras are dedicated for wide-angle, mono, ultra-wide, and telephoto shooting. The 2K 120Hz OLED screen on the phone curves along both edges. Huawei’s SuperCharge maxes out at 66W over the wire and 50W wirelessly.
But Huawei falls short in offering the most cutting-edge hardware and software experience. The chip inside the phone is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, modified with a 4G modem. As a result, the P50 Pocket lacks future-proofing. And the EMUI OS can’t run Google’s services either.
