The introduction of the ProMotion feature to the iPhone line has been rumored for years. The technology — first launched with the iPad Pro back in 2017 — dynamically adjusts the 120Hz refresh rate. And this year, Apple is finally launching it with the iPhone 13 series.
The report comes from the Korean publication The Elec detailing that the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will use 120Hz displays. Ming-Chi Kuo, Ross Young, Jon Prosser, and Max Weinbach, and many other industry analysts have claimed the same.
“The two higher tier iPhones this year that will use RFPCB will have low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) OLED panels,” the Elec wrote. Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Samsung Display will be supplying this iPhone 13 Pro hardware.
The LTPO screens can operate on low power and switch fluidly between 1Hz-120Hz rates; the tweaks conserve battery life. The rigid-flexible printed circuit boards or RFPCBs make for flexible displays which can be folded in on themselves.
In doing so, the chin can be trimmed off to the very edges. Rumor has it that the iPhone 13 notch will also be smaller than its predecessors, which leaves more room for the screen. Naturally, the OLED panels support the always-on display feature.
The Elec further notes that since Samsung Electro-Mechanics plans to kill their RFPCB business, other third-party manufacturers will supply the components through Samsung. Samsung Display is set to deliver 110 million display units, LG will supply 50 million panels, and 9 million will come from BOE.
