HMD Global is planning on unveiling a series of new Nokia phones at the upcoming IFA 2020 event. At least two entry-level devices will be making their debut there, including the Nokia 2.4. Once again, the new lineup won’t feature a flagship phone — signaling that Nokia under the new management has hit a glass ceiling ever since the Nokia 9 PureView. Underwhelming chipsets, a stagnated design playbook, confusing naming scheme, and average cameras have assumed somewhat of a pattern with new Nokia releases. But could the upcoming phones change that?
The brand has yet to kick off a Nokia 2.4 teaser campaign but various certification listings give us a scattered preview of what to expect. Let’s start with the 2.4 — successor to the Nokia 2.3 and codenamed ‘Wolverine’.
The screen size of the upcoming 2.4 smartphone has now grown from 6.2-inch to 6.5 inches while the battery capacity has been upped to 4,800 mAh with no fast charging support.
The two-year-old MediaTek-made Helio P22 mobile platform powers the phone, in addition to 2GB/3GB of RAM and 16GB/32GB of storage. Nokia 2.4 inherits its entire camera setup from the 2.3 — 13MP + 2MP on the back and 5MP on the front.
A leaked mockup of the device shows an almost identical design language to its predecessor. There’s a pill-style dual camera around the back and a notch on the front. The edges on the Nokia 2.4 seem to have been softened further and the corners rounded. Nokia has added a fingerprint scanner on the back, however — a welcome addition to the otherwise recycled build.
There’s also the mystery device, quirkily codenamed after another Marvel character, the ‘Gamora Plus’. It uses a similar entry-level processor made by Unisoc (a lesser-known silicon manufacturer). It has been signed off by TENNA revealing a 2GB/3GB and 32GB memory configuration. Though it remains to be seen if the two ultra-budget devices will use the ‘Go’ edition of the latest Android.
