OPPO Reno 7 Series to Feature a Sleek 'Star Trail' Design Crafted with Laser Etchings

Oppo Reno 7 series is slated to make its global debut on February 4. But the pre-release promotional campaign kicked off over a week ago. To generate more hype around the upcoming Reno line, Oppo detailed the design process for the unique finish on these phones.

The Reno series features the OPPO Reno 7 SE, Reno 7 Pro, and Reno 7. They don’t offer a radical redesign over their predecessors, but (thanks to the many iterations of the formula), the Reno 7 series has the most striking and polished look. The clean lines, the flat frame, the LED notification light, the balanced, geometric aesthetic make for a gorgeous slab phone.

But the highlight, of course, is the ‘shooting star finish’ on the glass casings of Reno 7 phones. The metal brush texture creates a star trail captured in long exposure. The blend of glittered glossy and matte surfaces also rounds off the design.

In explaining the design process, Oppo reported that it employed ‘Laser Direct Imaging’ or LDI technology to etch very fine lines on the shells. The technology is usually reserved for printing specialized circuit boards. But it was repurposed here to engrave no less than 1.2 million etchings onto the new Reno OPPO mobile's glass surface.

The optical illusion works by virtue of many photosensitive layers on the Reno 7, creating the star trail pattern when viewed from different angles. The camera island has a more organized lens cluster, split into two halves.

Its accents contrast nicely with the backplate. Also, the rails on this camera housing are made of zirconium for better durability and scratch resistance.
