Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra Might Bring Back Variable Aperture Cameras

There’s no denying that Samsung is working on a Galaxy S26 Ultra now. Fresh reports say this device will have many new and improved functions. We hear one of the most important upgrades might be a variable aperture for the camera that is making a comeback after seven years.

Back in 2018, when Samsung launched the Galaxy S9 and S9+, a “Variable Aperture” was introduced with the device’s camera for the first time. Even the Galaxy S10 series had f/1.5 to f/2.4 hardware variable aperture a year later, but Samsung decided to pull the plug on this feature with the S20 series and the flagship lineups after that.

There’s a rumor going around that claims a variable camera aperture might be coming back to the flagship Galaxy devices again, starting with the S26 family. Ice Universe leaked this detail on Chinese Weibo, and after translating the source, we learned that it will be implemented on Galaxy S26 Ultra’s main rear camera.

If you look at the bigger picture, this function isn’t exactly ground-breaking or exclusive since it’s also available on the Xiaomi 14 Ultra. We’ve yet to learn if the new Ultra Samsung mobile will adopt a fixed dual aperture method of its precursor or will implement something modern like the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, which has an extensive aperture range.

Of course, we advise you to be critical of the leaked details because it’s quite early for credible information to appear on the web. As for Ice Universe’s tip about the camera, this insider has years of experience and accurate predictions to back up his credibility. Still, there’s always a chance that Samsung might change its plans in the future, so take this news with a pinch of salt.

The Galaxy S26 series will probably be unveiled in January next year, which is quite far. For now, though, we wait for the Galaxy S25 Edge’s upcoming debut sometime in April or May. After the iterative Galaxy S25 series, the Edge is probably the most innovative design Samsung has ever made, with a nearly ~5.5mm thin chassis. It’s a full flagship handset alleged to cost around $1100 with limited production. Stay tuned if you want to learn more about the phone’s specs and upcoming launch in the next few weeks.
