The rumor mill shared quite a progressive report yesterday about next year’s Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, saying there are some massive improvements on the horizon. Samsung has a new tech in R&D for the S26 Ultra, allegedly named Color Filter on Encapsulation (CoE), which might better its screen quality.
A Korean source on TheElec publication shared details about this new technology, claiming it will debut in about a year. This isn’t a completely new feature, says the report. This tech has been used in Galaxy foldables since the Z Fold 3 came out, but Samsung now wants to use it with ordinary bar-sized phones for the first time.
Samsung’s focus for CoE is Galaxy S26 Ultra, as no other phones were mentioned by name in this new report. We’d also like to add that the source neither claims nor denies that Galaxy S26 and S26+ will have this new display tech, so we have some hope for the underlings.
Color Filters on Encapsulation (CoE) displays don’t have polarizers on the upper layer, but color filters are used for light transmission. This makes the OLED panel of the Samsung new flagship model thinner. It even switches the usual Pixel Define Layer to a black PDL and stops the lights from reflecting inside the OLED itself.
Black PDL is important for this tech to remove reflections, which was a role played by Polarizer. The polarizers reduced the brightness by 50%, but CoE will use Black PDL and Color filter layer to help achieve better results and keep the reflections to a minimum. This tech will also make the newest S26 Ultra’s OLED more efficient. S24 Ultra is already plenty bright at 2600nits, so we are excited to see how far Samsung takes it with CoE.
