Vivo Y53s Officially Unveiled with a 5G Qualcomm Chip, Smooth 90 Hz Display, and Dual-Camera

Without much fanfare, Vivo unveiled the long-rumored Y53s in China yesterday. Unlike the Vivo V21 flagship, the new y-series handset features value-friendly specs and is 5G powered by Qualcomm. After several seasons of following the same design rulebook, Vivo has introduced some new aesthetic tweaks too.

You’ll be hard-pressed to place the Vivo Y53s in its product catalog; based on the name alone, it should be a higher-end edition of Vivo Y53 that came out in 2017. But the new Y53s doesn’t share anything with the original Y53 except for its name.

Confusing naming scheme aside, the Y53s has the powerful Snapdragon 480 at its heart. It’s the first 5G chip in Qualcomm’s budget SD400 series, built on an 8nm fabrication process. The Snapdragon X51 modem is baked into this silicon, offering dual-mode 5G connectivity,

Vivo Y53s is powered by a 5000 mAh battery that can fast-charge over 18W. You get 8GB of memory for multitasking and 128GB of internal storage. The USB standard on the new Vivo mobile phone is Type-C, and the build also includes a convenient 3.5mm audio jack. A side-facing thumbprint is integrated with the power button.

Instead of the familiar ‘big eye’ layout for the cameras, the Y53s has a conservative and compact camera plate used to house two lenses stacked on top of each other. The shell is flat with beveled edges and corners, available in Iridescent, Sea Salt, and Starry Night colors. The screen is a standard affair for a budget Android phone. We’re looking at a notched 6.58” IPS LCD with a Full HD resolution and a responsive refresh rate of 90Hz.

An 8MP selfie camera is embedded inside the notch. Flip the Y53s over to find a dual camera featuring a 64MP wide lens and a low-res 4cm macro sensor. Vivo ships it with the latest Android11-based OriginOS. The base edition starts from CNY 1,799 (~ Rs. 43,800.)
