Last month, Vivo launched a semi-premium handheld dubbed Y78+ in China, featuring a Snapdragon 695 SoC. Today, the company has introduced a follow-up model powered by the Dimensity 7020 chip. They call it Vivo Y78, and clearly, it's the trimmed vanilla version stemming from the original device.
Despite what the naming suggests, both models have several notable differences; the most obvious being their displays. The older model has a curved AMOLED panel, and the newcomer embodies a fully-flat 6.64" Full HD+ 120Hz LCD with a fingerprint on the side instead of the screen.
Despite bearing identical cells at 5,000 mAh and 44W wired charging support, the Y78 is chunkier and heavier than the Y78+. It might have something to do with the phone’s design. After all, the new Y78 is all flat with no curves.
With a few bits trimmed from the camera, Y78 offers an almost similar experience to the Plus variant. The primary camera on the Vivo 5G's new model has OIS, which the Y78's 50MP unit lacks. Nevertheless, both phones feature 2MP depth units, with an 8MP sensor on the front for selfies.
Regarding software, the new Y78 model runs OriginOS 3, based on Android 13. It is essential to note that OriginOS 3 is currently only available in the Chinese market.
Furthermore, Vivo Y78 has numerous advanced features such as a USB-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity — a notable upgrade compared to the Y78+'s Bluetooth 5.1. The newcomer boasts three storage configurations, 8GB/128GB, 8GB/256GB, and 12GB/256GB starting at CNY 1,399 (~PKR 58,000).
