Xiaomi 15 Ultra Aiming for the Finest Zoom Camera; 200MP Periscope Incoming

Xiaomi is building an entirely new camera system for its next Ultra device. Soon, in a month or two, they will reveal two base models named Xiaomi 15 and 15 Pro. But down the line, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra will join the foray early in 2025. DCS reports that Xiaomi has planned some groundbreaking stuff for Ultra’s camera system.

Digital Chat Station posted on Weibo and explained how Xiaomi has dual configurations under testing for the 15 Ultra. One of those, he hints, has a quad-camera system. The prime highlight of this system could be a 200MP periscope telephoto shooter with a Samsung ISOCELL HP9 outsole.

It’s the lens setup they used for the Vivo X100 Ultra, and it consistently outraced competitors in zoom shots. DCS’s claim sounds believable, seeing that IceUniverse reported something similar about a week ago. Here’s a surface-level overview of the HP9 sensor by Samsung.

It’s a 1/1.4” sized optical lens that captures 200 million pixels per shot. Each of those pixels is 0.56 microns in size. That is Samsung’s recipe for pixel-rich sharp images. Then, the sensor uses 4x4 pixel binning to output 12 MP images.

HP9 sensor can allow 2x and 4x in-sensor zoom on its own. Slap a 3x telephoto on it, and you get about 12x lossless zoom. HP9 sticks a very highly refractive microlens on the sensor and that’s how it focuses light more precisely on each diode.

It will be the finest improvement ever seen on a Xiaomi Ultra device. Other than that, leaks point to a dual-layer OLED, ultra-sonic fingerprint reader, and Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 with about 24 GB RAM included in the Xiaomi 15 Ultra spec sheet.
