As Xiaomi gears up for Mi 14 Ultra’s debut in China, leaks surrounding the Xiaomi 15 series have started gaining momentum. A recent break, courtesy of Chinese tipster Smart Pikachu, sheds light on a notable feature expected in the Xiaomi 15 Pro and Xiaomi 15 Ultra models — an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner.
While it may be a worthy addition for Pro variants, it remains unsure whether the standard Xiaomi 15 will adopt this technology or opt for an optical in-display fingerprint sensor. The leak suggests that Xiaomi will employ ultrasonic technology for the 15 Pro and 15 Ultra variants, advancing its mobile technology.
Ultrasonic fingerprint sensors use sound waves to create a 3D map of the user's fingerprint, providing enhanced accuracy and security. Notably, this technology excels in challenging conditions, offering reliable performance even with wet or dirty fingers.
While optical sensors, which capture a 2D image of the fingerprint using light, are generally faster, they may be more susceptible to spoofing. Ultrasonic sensors, by contrast, provide reliable and secure biometric authentication, especially in adverse environmental conditions, as seen in the latest Xiaomi 5G models.
Recent models such as the Galaxy S24 series, Find X7 Ultra, and iQOO 12 Pro have embraced ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint sensors, emphasizing the industry's inclination toward this technology. Reports also suggest that the Xiaomi 15 series will enclose a Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset.
Xiaomi 15 will likely feature a 6.36-inch OLED 120Hz flat display with 1.5K resolution, while the 15 Pro might flex a larger curved screen with 2K resolution. Production for the Xiaomi 15 series might commence in September, hinting at a potential launch in October. Once the Mi 14 global launch is out of the way, more details about the series should come to light.
