Xiaomi Announces Redmi Note 9S with a Punch Hole Display, Scheduled to Launch in Malaysia Next Week

The recently-introduced Xiaomi Redmi 9 Pro and Pro Max duo are soon to be joined by a third member, dubbed Xiaomi Redmi 9S. Xiaomi Malaysia’s official Facebook page has announced the phone, and it’s shaping up to bridge the gap between the ‘Pro Max’ and ‘Pro’ editions.

The Chinese firm is running a marketing campaign on social media in Malaysia, and giving away brand new Redmi Note phones to fans who share their experience with one of the Redmi Note models.

More to the point, a teaser post details that the phone is scheduled for launch on March 23 at attractive Xiaomi Prices, and hints at a quad-camera that shares its design language with the variants mentioned above in this latest series. The exact details for the optics hardware haven’t been revealed, but out front, you’re looking at a centered punch-hole design — which appears to be directly inspired by Samsung’s new Infinity-O displays.

The build appears to be smaller, but chunkier than its ‘Pro’ and ‘Pro Max’ counterparts. Xiaomi will shrink the screen size down, but you can expect an FHD+ resolution all the same.

No additional details are available as of now, but speculation points to a Snapdragon 720G platform (the same SoC that powers the other two models), at least 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of native storage. The hardware could draw power from a 5,020 mAh cell with support for 18W fast charging and run on the latest Android-10-based MIUI 11.

Note that Xiaomi launched another Redmi Note carrying the ‘S’ moniker in India last year. This iteration, called the Redmi 7S, featured a 48MP primary shooter, coupled with a 5MP depth assist lens, so you can expect the upcoming Redmi 9S to rock at least a 48MP primary sensor.

Because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the launch is likely to be a purely virtual event. WhatMobile expects the phone to carry a Xiaomi price tag of around 27,999 PKR (which comes to roughly $175.)
