Mi MIX Fold Withstands Rigorous Durability Test; Survives after 4,00,000 Bendings, Enough for 10 Years

The Mi Mix Fold is Xiaomi's first commercial attempt at the foldable form factor, built with an emphasis on durability. And what better way to demonstrate the feature than folding and unfolding it on live stream for seven days straight. The Mi Fold survived after being continuously folded over 400,000 times.

In a live broadcast hosted by Xiaomi’s founder, Lei Jun, the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold was put through a rigorous testing process. It would be folded and unfolded on its hinge once every 1.6 seconds all day, every day for seven days straight. An audience of 2 million witnessed these 180 hours of testing, and the Mi Mix Fold came out intact after hundreds of thousands of tests.

In terms of regular use, assuming that you unfold and fold the device one hundred times every day, the Mi Mix Fold will be good for ten years or more. The hinge is one of the most — if not the most — fragile components of a foldable. And if the original Galaxy Fold from Samsung is any indication, this level of durability is no small feat of smartphone engineering.

For our readers out of the loop, the Mi Mix Fold (unlike other Mi Mix concept phones) is meant for the consumer market. The new Fold, built on the traditional inward folding form factor, is a flagship device in the ranks of the latest premium phones at an affordable Xiaomi mobile price.

Its main screen is an 8.01” QHD+ panel that peaks at 60Hz; the cover screen is 6.5” and QHD OLED. Mix Fold is powered by the 5nm Snapdragon 888, 12GB/16GB of LPDD5 memory, 256GB/512GB of ultra-fast UFS 3.1 storage. You get a 5020 mAh dual-cell battery that charges over 67W.

The Mi Mix Fold is also the first phone to feature the so-called ‘liquid lens’ technology in its 3x telephoto lens that affords it variable focal length. A standard 108MP Samsung-made sensor and a 13MP ultra-wide lens are also part of this optics setup.
